As indulgers of coffee ourselves, we believe that owning a Linea Mini is a statement of intent. Once you incorporate a Mini into your daily routine, things change. Now, your morning coffees are about embracing that meticulous, rewarding world of the home barista. There are gorgeous cups of coffee to be had, for years and years from here.

But to reap those rewards, you need to keep your machine nice and clean. As any craftsman will tell you, the quality of the tool is only as good as the care it receives.

Because espresso is a concentrated extraction of oils, sugars, and solids, it leaves behind a residue that, if ignored, can quickly mask the bright, nuanced flavours of your speciality beans.

Here is a guide to maintaining your Linea Mini coffee machine, written with the same care we put into building it.

your daily cleaning ritual

The most important part of maintaining your Linea Mini happens in the seconds following your extraction. We like to think of these as micro-habits that keep the machine in a state of constant readiness. There are two we’d love you to adopt as often as you can.

purge and wipe your steam wand

Milk contains proteins and fats that, when heated, can quickly bake onto the stainless steel. Immediately after steaming your milk, give the wand a quick burst of steam to clear any internal residue, and wipe the exterior with a dedicated damp microfiber cloth. This prevents the buildup of something called “milk stone” and ensures your next latte is as hygienic as it is delicious.

the group flush

After you remove your portafilter following a shot, run the paddle for two or three seconds. This simple act rinses away loose coffee grounds from the shower screen and the gasket. It prevents these old, spent grounds from being pressed into your next fresh puck, which would otherwise introduce a bitter, ashy flavour to your espresso.

While the machine is running this quick flush, it is also a wonderful time to give your portafilter a quick rinse and a wipe with a dry cloth.

Those two daily habits will stand you in very good stead with the future of your Linea Mini coffee machine.

weekly linea mini cleaning

On top of your daily habits, keeping a quick weekly routine will help your Mini espresso machine go the distance.

Once a week, or perhaps every 15 to 20 shots if you are an enthusiastic host, your Linea Mini coffee machine requires a backflush. It’s so simple.

This process uses the machine’s internal three-way solenoid valve to force water and a specialised espresso cleaner backwards through the group head, clearing out the coffee oils that settle deep within the internal plumbing.

how to do a blackflush

To perform this, you will replace your standard coffee basket with a blind filter basket (the one with no holes). Place a small amount of espresso machine detergent into the blind basket and engage the brew paddle.

Let the pressure build for about five to ten seconds, then disengage. You will hear the satisfying whoosh of the pressure being released into the drip tray; this is the detergent doing its work, scrubbing the internal valves.

Repeat this process five times with the detergent, and then ten more times with just plain water to ensure every trace of the cleaner has been rinsed away.

This simple weekly backflush ritual is perhaps the single most important thing you can do to preserve the longevity of your mini espresso machine. It keeps the internal pathways clear and prevents the mechanical parts from seizing over time due to oil buildup.

a quick note on water

Finally, we must talk about water. Since coffee is 98% water, the quality of what you put into your Linea Mini is paramount. New Zealand and Australian water can vary significantly in mineral content. If your water is too hard, it will cause scale buildup inside the boilers, which can eventually lead to expensive repairs.

Therefore, we recommend using the water-testing kit that comes with your Linea Mini coffee machine. Whether you use the internal reservoir with the La Marzocco water softener pouch or you opt to plumb your machine in with filtration, keeping an eye on your water quality is the ultimate act of care for your machine.

The Linea Mini includes PID temperature controllers and the dual boilers, both of which can perform with precision, only if they aren’t contaminated with minerals.

Ultimately, taking these small, regular steps to care for your Linea Mini coffee machine will be well worth the time and effort. If you clean and care for them, you protect the engineering that makes our machines special.

We are very proud to have you as part of the La Marzocco family. If you have a question about a specific cleaning product or part of the process, remember that we are here to guide you.
