Jennifer Redmond has made a significant mark on the Northern Rivers community and beyond with her unique approach to the art of pottery.
Whether it be through her ability to craft unique homewares by hand through her brand, Yucca Stone or passion to mentor emerging ceramicists through her open studio space, Stone Studio, Jennifer believes the art of pottery is one which anyone can benefit from.
Born and raised In Vancouver, Jennifer brings a worldly view to her practice after following her Australian partner from her picturesque hometown in Canada to the vibrant city of San Diego, before settling down in the beachside suburb of Kingscliff, NSW.
While making her mark on Australia’s diverse creative landscape by shaping Australian clay by hand to create homewares of unique shapes and textures, Jennifer doesn’t shy away from sharing the origins of her craft, which were born out trial and error, and a pursuit to feel connected within her community.
‘Pottery is something I’ve always wanted to try.’
New to the city of San Diego, Jennifer was on a mission to find a creative outlet that would ground her mentally and introduce her to like-minded locals amidst a foreign and bustling city. Always curious about the art of pottery, Jennifer decided to take the leap and sign up to a beginner’s course at a pottery studio in her local area.
Taken by the tactile nature of the craft and her ability to physically control and mould the outcome of her objects, Jennifer found herself returning to the studio on a regular basis, eager to learn more about different techniques and methods.
‘Finding that special community of people made a huge difference.’
It was at this studio that Jennifer found the supportive and like-minded community that she had been searching for. A space where she was able to speak openly about her interest in pottery and develop new skills through an open exchange of techniques with other members of the studio.
Forming a collection of bowls and planters from her time at the studio, Jennifer began selling her handmade items to local stockists in California under the name, Yucca Stone.
An ode to the Californian landscape she quickly grew to adore, the name Yucca Stone was inspired by the native yucca trees she would draw inspiration from, and the earth she used to craft her original pieces.
Now based in Kingscliff, NSW, Jennifer continues to embrace Yucca Stone by working from her farm setting and selling her unique works in selected stockists in the local area. When not in the studio on her farm, you can normally find Jennifer mentoring emerging ceramicists out of her own community studio and coffee bar, Stone Studio.
While taking her practice to a new country may sound easy, Jennifer shares that in the realm of pottery, this essentially means starting from scratch. As local Australian clay is quite different to the materials she was used to in California, Jennifer has had to take time, to learn and appreciate the textures and forms of Australian earth, one which she has learned to embrace in her collection of works.
